Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers supports California’s proposed ban on the manufacture and fabrication of artificial stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica. Founder and Managing Attorney Jeffrey Nadrich says the measure could help protect countertop workers from silicosis, a serious and often fatal occupational lung disease linked to silica dust exposure.
Los Angeles, CA October 15, 2026 –(PR.com)– Jeffrey Nadrich, Founder and Managing Attorney of Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers, supports the proposed ban of the manufacture and fabrication of artificial stone containing over 1% crystalline silica in California.
Nadrich notes that cutting, grinding and polishing artificial stone can release respirable crystalline silica dust into the air, putting countertop workers at risk of silicosis, an incurable, often fatal lung disease. The firm’s California silicosis attorneys represent workers and families affected by occupational silica exposure.
“Countertop workers should not have to risk incurable lung disease to earn a living,” Nadrich said.
Nadrich supports moving the countertop industry toward safer materials that reduce workers’ exposure to crystalline silica.
Cal/OSHA, on September 16, 2026, released a draft of proposed changes and additions to California Code of Regulations Title 8. The draft proposes the strict prohibition of the manufacture and fabrication of artificial stone containing over 1% crystalline silica by weight in any place of employment.
The draft release came after the Western Occupational and Environmental Medicine Association petitioned Cal/OSHA, asking the board to ban the fabrication and installation of artificial stone containing more than 1% crystalline silica.
That petition noted that an Australian ban on the use, supply and manufacturing of artificial stone was “largely working as expected” according to an Australian government evaluation.
There have been 662 confirmed cases of artificial stone-related silicosis in California since 2019 as of October 7, 2026, according to the California Department of Public Health. These cases have included 35 deaths, with a median age of diagnosis of 46 years old and a median age of death being 52. Over 200 cases were confirmed in 2025, and almost 200 cases have been confirmed in 2026. Of the 662 total cases, 75 workers have undergone lung transplants.
Nadrich adds that workers who have been affected may have legal options and may be able to seek financial compensation from distributors, manufacturers and other responsible parties. Nadrich Accident Injury Lawyers has 17 offices throughout California, including an office serving Merced and the surrounding area. Nadrich points out that immigrants can file claims, and that engineered stone manufacturers and other viable defendants could be held liable in silicosis cases.
