Je Woo Kim’s “The Rise of Seoul” reveals how South Korea transformed from postwar devastation into a global economic and cultural powerhouse.
CHARLESTON, SC, UNITED STATES, September 15, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Accomplished engineer, entrepreneur, inventor, and technology executive Je Woo Kim, PhD, offers a firsthand exploration of South Korea’s extraordinary transformation in his new book, “The Rise of Seoul: South Korea’s Journey from Rags to Riches.” Published by Advantage Books and distributed by Simon & Schuster, the book is now available at major book retailers nationwide.
Drawing on more than six decades of personal observation and a career spanning South Korea and Silicon Valley, Kim invites readers to examine how a nation devastated by colonial rule, war, poverty, and scarce natural resources became a global leader in economics, technology, innovation, and culture.
In “The Rise of Seoul,” Kim weaves together history, economic development, cultural context, and personal experience to illuminate the forces behind South Korea’s transformation. From the aftermath of the Korean War and the “Miracle on the Han River” to democratization, technological advancement, and the global rise of Korean culture, the book emphasizes the role of education, effective institutions, strategic economic development, innovation, and the collective determination of the Korean people.
“Any nation—no matter how dire its circumstances—can uncover its own path to prosperity, just as South Korea once did,” Kim writes. His central argument is that national success is not predetermined by geography or natural resources, but shaped by the systems people build, the choices leaders and institutions make, and the ability of a society to adapt and invest in its people.
Through chapters spanning Korea’s historical and cultural foundations, Japanese colonial rule, national division, the Korean War, rapid industrialization, political change, and South Korea’s emergence as a global middle power, “The Rise of Seoul” traces the forces that shaped the modern country. Along the way, Kim brings the story to life through memories of growing up in rural South Korea, pursuing higher education, working in the country’s emerging technology sector, and later building a career in Silicon Valley.
More than a history of South Korea, “The Rise of Seoul” serves as a case study in national development and transformation. Kim examines how investments in mass education and human capital, merit-based opportunity, technology-intensive industries, coordinated economic strategy, and cultural adaptability helped create the foundation for sustained growth and broader opportunity.
“My personal journey mirrors South Korea’s rise from poverty and devastation to global prominence,” Kim writes. Born in rural South Korea in 1959, Kim witnessed the country’s development firsthand before becoming an engineer at Samsung, an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, a vice president at Qualcomm, and later a professor and startup mentor at KAIST.
Blending lived experience, historical perspective, and practical analysis, “The Rise of Seoul” challenges readers to look beyond simple explanations for national success. Instead, Kim shows how leadership, institutions, education, technology, timing, cultural resilience, and coordinated action can combine to reshape a country’s future—and offer lessons for nations, business leaders, and entrepreneurs seeking to create meaningful growth.
