Legion 44, Documentary on the Rise of Carbon Removal, Now Streaming Worldwide

The release comes as the world’s attention turns to New York for Climate Week, and at a time of mounting challenges when attention is turning to practical paths forward. The film examines one of them: the technologies, and the people, working to bring carbon back into the Earth’s cycles.

Narrated by Walton Goggins, Legion 44 is Conners’s fifth documentary feature. The film is produced by Leila Conners, Mathew Schmid, Paulina Villalonga, and Fabian Nilsson, and features cinematography by Harun Mehmedinovic, an original score by Marc Streitenfeld, and animation by Sun Creature.

The film documents what Conners describes as a spontaneous uprising of innovation — young engineers, scientists, and founders around the world, many of them in the Global South, who have set out to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and put it to use. Shot across five continents, Legion 44 follows this global “Legion” to the Hajar mountains of Oman, where CO is turned to stone; the Rift Valley of Kenya, where direct air capture runs ₂on geothermal power; the islands of Tuvalu; the southern Sahara; and the sargassum-rich seas of St. Vincent.

Rather than a political argument, Legion 44 presents carbon removal as a practical tool. The film traces how industry and energy have long operated in a straight line — extract, burn, release — and how removal technologies can close that line into a loop, locking carbon into stone, seawater, biochar, and durable materials so that human systems operate inside the carbon cycle rather than outside it.

“I was fascinated by the work of visionaries who are bringing breakthrough ideas to cycle carbon and place civilization inside the carbon cycle,” said Leila Conners, director of Legion 44.

That practical focus has shaped how the film lands with decision-makers. In screenings for policymakers, investors, and industry leaders, the filmmakers report that audiences have typically arrived with questions about whether carbon removal is real or ready — and left with a clear understanding of how the technologies work and a firm resolve to see them implemented.
